Denise Pope, Ph.D to Speak in Los Altos

The Family Resource Center is hosting an evening with Denise Pope, Ph.D. “The Well Balanced Child: Avoiding Stress and Over-Scheduling.” This free event takes place at the Los Altos United Methodist Church--Creekside:
Thursday, April 30, 2009 from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM (PT)
Los Altos, CA. Click here to register.

Event Details (taken from eventbrite site):
Children today live in a culture that is increasingly characterized by a "more is better" and "earlier is better" mindset, both in and out of school. This fast-paced existence for kids too often places them under undue pressure and stress. This can result in burnout, disengagement, unhealthy life patterns, or debilitating health problems. Further, over-scheduling infringes upon the most productive activity for children: unstructured play! This is an event you will not want to miss!

This evening is a must for parents seeking a healthy balance between achievement and personal fulfillment for their children. In this presentation you will learn about: the unique demands placed on children's time today; how today's high-pressure society can have unintentional but damaging effects on children; and simple ways your family can counter this fast-paced culture without sacrificing achievement while still allowing kids to be kids.

Denise is the author of "Doing School": How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students. She founded and now directs Challenge Sucess, a research and intervention effort to work with K-12 schools to counter the causes of academic stress. She also has been a lecturer at the Stanford University School of Education for the past 8 years.

Invite your neighbors and friends! This parent education event is FREE and sponsored by the Family Resource Center at the Children's Center Preschool in Los Altos. For more information contact: Jenny Morgan at jennifermorgan@laumc.org. Visit our website: www.childrenscenterpreschool.org.

YES on Measure B

The Yes on Measure B campaign needs your help.  If you are able to help with the phone banks or the community walks, please click here to register.

With budget cuts looming, it is imperative that we pass Measure B.  Measure B will provide funding that will help to retain experienced and qualified teachers, maintain smaller class sizes, and protect educational programs such as math, science, music and art.

Measure B will cost property owners $125 per year, or just under $10.50 per month. Measure B will expire in 6 years and cannot be renewed without voter approval. All funds go directly to the schools in our neighborhoods and cannot be taken by the state.

All registered voters who live in the Cupertino Union School District will be mailed a ballot in early April. When you receive your ballot in the mail, fill it out and return it by mail to vote in the election. There will be no cost for postage when mailing the ballot. Be sure to mail your ballot by April 28th for your vote to be counted!

Jump Ropes--FInd Them at the Dollar Tree

Jump Rope for Heart is taking place at my kids' school over the next week. If your child is participating and needs a little practice --shopaholicmom suggests you run don't walk to the Dollar Tree. You'll find jump ropes for a buck. You can pick up one for all your kids and they can practice at home. Participating in this fundraiser will allow our children to understand the importance of community service and physical activity while helping to save lives!
